If you have a yeast infection or some other kind of Candida infection, you may have heard that acidophilus can help you get rid of the infection. Acidophilus is a specific type of bacteria that is naturally attracted to acidic substances. It is considered a “good” bacteria since it is helpful in maintaining and promoting body functions. Acidophilus naturally occurs in the digestive tract and in the vagina where it defends the body from hostile organisms. This little bacteria will also help to make the essential chemicals needed in the digestion process.
But even more important to you, this bacteria can also inhibit the growth of and even kill off the candida albicans fungus that is behind yeast infections. You’ll find candida albicans occurring naturally in your digestive system, mouth and throat, and even in the pubic area. In other words, it thrives in warm and moist conditions. This is what is responsible for yeast infections, candida outbreaks, and other forms of fungal infections in the vagina, mouth, and throat. If you don’t treat the infection, it may develop to the point that you can actually see it as white spots.
A vaginal yeast infection can result in a white or grey-ish, odorless discharge. Other symptoms include burning, itching, and redness in the affected area. You might even notice pain during urination or during sexual activity or shortly afterward.
Babies may also get yeast infections in the form of diaper rash. Children are more prone to diaper rash because they’re natural immune system, including the acidophilus bacteria, has not fully developed yet. The diaper rash often follows a period of treating some other problem with antibiotics. You can tell if your child has a diaper rash if they have a red or irritated area on their skin. It is normally patchy and sometimes raised. By using a paste made out of water mixed with acidophilus, you should be able to get rid of the diaper rash quickly. You can make the recovery even faster if you add a teaspoon of acidophilus to baby formula or any kind of baby food that the child eats.
For vaginal infections, yogurt containing “live bacteria cultures” can help to restore balance and fight off the candida albicans fungus. In a study, women with chronic or recurring yeast infections reported a significant decrease of yeast infections after simply eating an 8 oz. cup of yogurt daily containing acidophilus. Aside from yeast infections, yogurt containing acidophilus has also been known to help with indigestions, diarrhea, and even urinary tract infections.
Acidophilus can also be found in special kinds of milk in addition to yogurts. Food like carrots, bananas, soybeans, garlic, and certain beans are also great sources of acidophilus. You can also get capsules or powders of acidophilus at most health food stores too. Many of these supplements also contain other beneficial bacteria as well.
